Resident Evil 3
Following on from 2019’s critically acclaimed remake of Resident Evil 2, this souped-up sequel is everything you could hope for in a zombie game. The action set pieces are bigger, the tyrannical titan that stalks you throughout is badder, the gore is bloodier and the gunplay is even more satisfying.
You play as Jill Valentine, a former special forces operative who finds herself fighting for her life in the undead-ravaged streets of Racoon City. As in the original 1999 game, an unstoppably deadly super-monster known as Nemesis is hot on your tail throughout, and the game manages to blend moments of gripping tension with serious scares and frenetic action in a heady mix that no horror fan should be able to resist.
Zombie Hoard
Providing a different twist on the zombie genre, this is a horror-themed online slots game which is one of thousands that can be found over on the Casumo site.
It features spooky and kooky character icons styled after the shambling corpses we all know and love from decades of pop culture, as well as a range of appropriately zombie-like sound effects and plenty of other perks to keep you playing, including free spins.
Dead By Daylight
If you are looking for a horror game that crams in more references to classic franchises than any other, then Dead By Daylight is definitely one to add to your wish list.
At the core of this asymmetric multiplayer game is the excellent concept of having 4 gamers take on the role of victims, while one player steps into the shoes of the psychotic killer. Victims can work as a team to try and survive, while the killer has to do their best to stop them escaping by any means necessary.
With gritty visuals, superb first-person gameplay and a kind of electrifying cat-and-mouse style of action, Dead By Daylight is a firm favourite of thousands of fans.
The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan
If you enjoyed the well made Until Dawn when it first appeared on PS4 a few years ago, you should definitely check in on its spiritual successor, Man of Medan.
More of an interactive movie than a fully fledged game, it takes horror story telling to the next level by giving you direct control over the fates of the various characters, opening up a branching narrative that has a number of different potential outcomes to experience.
Man of Medan is also something of a party game, since it aims to appeal to people who want to play in groups and is just as much fun to watch as it is to actually control. The slick visuals, atmospheric setting and the fact that this is just the first in a planned series of eight episodic horror games make it all the more worthy of your time.
Bloodborne
It may be 5 years old at this point, but From Software’s PS4 exclusive is still arguably one of the greatest games ever made and manages to combine fast paced action, brutal difficulty and a tale of obscure Lovecraftian horror that will have you hooked.
Taking place in the plague-ravaged city of Yharnam, Bloodborne is an action RPG in the same vein as Dark Souls, but with an emphasis on offensiveness rather than defensiveness. Aggression is emphasised because you regain health if you attack an enemy shortly after taking damage, and the wide variety of horrific enemies you face in the many different environments it offers will take your breath away. From vile werewolves to mutated vicars, it is a feast for the senses.
